Whereas educational attainment is a main determinant of individuals’ future living standards, in 2006 Aboriginal Canadian high school completion rates were lower than the total population high school completion rates for almost all of Canada’s major census metropolitan areas (CMAs). The overall comparison across Canada was 56% completion for Aboriginal Canadians versus 76% for the general population. Notably, amongst the CMAs where the gap is highest are Winnipeg and Edmonton; cities with a very high proportion of Aboriginal residents.
