HIGH SCHOOL NON-COMPLETION RATE

At a rate of 23.5% of the population 15 and over, the high school non-completion rate in the economic region of Red Deer in 2006 was 1% higher than the national average and 13% higher than the provincial average25.

PROPORTION OF THE POPULATION AGED 15 YRS AND OVER WITH COMPLETED POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

In 2001 the proportion of the population 15 years and over with a Post-Secondary Education (University Degree; Post-Secondary Certificate or Diploma) was 50.1% for Red Deer. This is 2.8% below the provincial average and 1.8% less than the national average26.

In 2001, the Red Deer population with continuing post secondary education was 64.4 % compared to that of the Alberta at 66.3 percet. The Canadian population with continuing post secondary education is 63.5 %28.

"Prose Literacy" focuses on the knowledge and skills to understand and use information from texts such as editorials, news stories, brochures, manuals and fiction.

Scores in the 276-325 range are considered "level-3" proficiency - the proficiency level required for a modern economy and knowledge society.32

The average adult literacy score for prose in Red Deer was 283 in 2003.This score was 4 % above the national average of 272 and equivalent to the provincial average of 283.33

ADULT NUMERACY SCORES

"Numeracy Literacy" addresses the ability to interpret, apply, and communicate mathematical information in commonly encountered situations.

Scores in the 276-325 range are considered "level-3" proficiency - the proficiency level required for a modern economy and knowledge society34.

The average adult literacy score for numeracy in Red Deer was 274 in 2003. This score was 4% above the national average of 26335.

PERCENTAGE OF PERSONS THAT ENTER INTO TRADES

Based on the 2001 Census, the Red Deer population that is completing trades certificates or diplomas is 16.3 % compared to the provincial percentage of 15.3 %. The Canadian population completing trades certificates or diplomas is 12.9 %. Red Deer County has a completion rate of 20.5 %36.

NUMBER OF COURSES AVAILABLE TO LIFELONG LEARNERS

In 2005-2006 the Life Long Learning Council offered to 107 courses that meet the criteria of Life Long Learning Programming by service provider37.

In 2005-2006, the Red Deer Public School Community Programs office offered 572 courses.

In this instance, the courses offered are available to all those in the community of all ages. The Red Deer Public School Division course frequency is so high, because a lot of the courses can be completed in just one month via the internet38.

In 2005, the Continuing Education department at Red Deer College offered 1110 programs39.
