Sudbury's Vital Signs Report 2007
Arts and Culture
Sudbury's arts community and cultural organizations enrich our city and contribute to our local economy. Spending on libraries has kept pace, however, local spending on arts and culture has been slipping in recent years.
- There was an increase in the percentage of employment in arts & culture-related occupations in Greater Sudbury from 1.72% in 2001 to 2.15% in 2003. In comparison the Ontario (2001 - 2.82%; 2003 - 2.10%) and Canadian (2001 - 2.74%; 2003 - 2.05%) percentages decreased. 16 , 16a
- Municipal government spending on arts and culture in Greater Sudbury was $4.32 per capita in 2000 and $1.06 per capita in 2005. 17 (See Figure 2)
- Municipal government spending on libraries in Greater Sudbury has been declining since a high of $45.81 per capita in 2003 to $43.15. 17 (See Figure 2)

- Greater Sudbury's median per capita spending on arts grants in 2005 was $1.58. This is lower than the Thunder Bay median of $4.46, for example, and the median of $3.04 for seven of the largest Ontario cities. 18
