Getting Around
Given the large geographic area of Greater Sudbury, public transportation is challenging. The majority of Sudburians continue to use cars to get around.
- In 2001, 4.9% of workers in Sudbury used public transportation to get to work. 30 In comparison almost 13% of Ontarians and 11% of all Canadians used public transportation. 4 The actual number of passenger bus trips in Greater Sudbury has been increasing from 3.6 million in 2003 to 4.1 million in 2005. (See Table 4) 25
- The cost to the city for an average bus trip for one person was $3.25 in 2003, $3.30 in 2004 and $3.09 in 2005. The overall annual transit operating cost has increased from $11.8 million in 2003 to $12.8 million in 2005. (See Table 4) 25

- The number of paved lane kilometers in Greater Sudbury has increased from 2,887 in 2003 to 2,974 in 2005. During that same time, the operating cost has increased from $1,536 per lane kilometer (2003) to $2,346 per lane kilometer (2005). Between 2003 and 2005, the number of unpaved lane kilometers has dropped from 635 (at a cost of $3,646 per lane kilometre to 598 ($3,507 per lane kilometre). 25 (See Figure 6)
