Canada’s Population
- Canada’s population grew by 5.4% between 2001 and 20063
- The average annual growth rate (1.02%) is almost identical to the rate in the 1990s (1.03%)
- Only Alberta and Ontario had population growth above the national average between 2001 and 2006
- Population growth is now largely due to immigration
- Canada’s elderly population is growing: by 2031, Statistics Canada projects seniors will account for a quarter of the total population -- almost double their current proportion5
- The 2005 median family income in Canada was $60,600 – an increase of 6.4% since 2000 when adjusted for inflation6
